BACKGROUND
The Tulane Center for Gene Therapy has received a grant funded by the NIH to provide well-characterized human adult stem cells, rat stem cells, and mouse stem cells to academic researchers worldwide upon request. The adult stem cells are the plastic adherent cells from bone marrow referred to as mesenchymal stem cells or marrow stromal cells (MSCs). The cells are isolated, expanded and extensively characterized in our own laboratories. We provide a detailed protocol for expansion of the cells. We also provide a Product Specification Sheet on each lot of cells that indicates many of the characteristics of the cells, including the proliferation rate we have observed in expanding the frozen vials of cells, data on colony forming units, and differentiation into mineralizing cells, adipocytes and chondrocytes. For an example of the Product Specification Sheet for human MSCs, see the sample spec sheet of characteristics.
NIH Memo
HUMAN ADULT STEM CELLS
Human adult stem cells are distributed frozen in two vials, each containing approximately one million adult stem cells. Also, available are lentivirus transduced MSCs containing fluorescent proteins such as either GFP (cytoplasmic expression), MitoRed or MitoBlue (mitochondrial expression) and some MSCs with a combination of GFP and either MitoRed or MitoBlue. Individuals interested in obtaining cell samples must first complete and return two signed originals of a Tulane University Materials Transfer Agreement to the address below. There is a negotiable handling charge of $150 for the two vials of human adult stem cells. The charge can be waived in hardship situations.Click here to see the MTA for Human Stem Cells

RAT ADULT STEM CELLS
Tulane Center for Gene Therapy also supplies samples of adult rat stem cells to academic researchers. Currently, stem cells from adult male Lewis rats are available. Samples of these cells are provided as a single vial containing approximately 300,000 to 500,000 cells. Individuals interested in obtaining cell samples must first complete and return two signed originals of a Tulane University Materials Transfer Agreement to the address below. There is a
negotiable
charge of $100 for the vial of rat stem cells. The charge can be waived in hardship situations.Click here to see the MTA for RAT Cells.
MOUSE ADULT STEM CELLS
Tulane Center for Gene Therapy also supplies samples of mouse stem cells to academic researchers. Stem cells from 2 strains of mice are available: C57Bl/6J, and C57Bl/6J expressing a GFP gene (ACTbEGFP and 1Osb). Samples of these cells are provided as a single vial containing approximately 300,000 to 500,000 cells. Individuals interested in obtaining cell samples must first complete and return two signed originals of a Tulane University Materials Transfer Agreement to the address below. There is a
