Clinical
Diagnostic Laboratories
The Human Genetics Diagnostic Laboratories provide state-of-the-art
diagnostic laboratory services to many hospitals and clinical
laboratories, both locally and throughout the country.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory
was established at Tulane in 1960 and was one of the first
such labs in the country. A Molecular
Genetics Laboratory was established in 1993. The Biochemical
Genetics Laboratory was established in 1978, and for
over 20 years has been the reference laboratory for the
State of Louisiana Genetic Diseases Program for the confirmatory
diagnosis of patients positively identified by newborn
screening for inborn errors of metabolism. The laboratories
are accredited by the College of American Pathologists
(CAP) and certified by CLIA and participate in all proficiency
testing offered by CAP and the National Tay-Sachs and
Allied Diseases Foundation (Biochemical Genetics). Our
laboratories are committed to quality and timely performance
of testing. The Human Genetics Program is unique in providing
the most comprehensive spectrum of genetic services to
the medical communities of Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf
Coast. The interpretation of the diagnostic testing is
always performed by board-certified Biochemical Genetics,
Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetics specialists.
The
services of the Human Genetics Program Diagnostic Laboratories
are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. A laboratory
staff member is always on-call for urgent physician consultations
and lab analyses.
