General Information
Located within the School of Medicine at the Tulane University Health Sciences Center in downtown New Orleans, Louisiana, the Department of Structural and Cellular Biology is committed to providing a quality education for both medical and graduate students while pursuing funded research, which will keep the department at the forefront in cancer biology and neuroscience. The department is further committed to providing service to the Medical School and University by the participation of the faculty on many key committees.
The department includes 7 full-time faculty members, a number of adjunct faculty, and a support staff, which combine to meet its educational and research goals. Educational responsibilities include teaching major components of the first-year medical school curriculum, including Gross & Developmental Anatomy, Human Medical Histology and Medical Neuroscience, as well as teaching various related graduate level courses. Research areas of expertise include reproductive endocrinology and toxicity, neuroendocinology, neuroendocine influences of breast cancer, endocrine response mechanisms of breast cancer, the neurobiology of addiction, visual and somatic sensory neuroscience, control of cellular differentiation and the functional and structural organization of the retina among others. The research facilities within the Department of Structural and Cellular Biology include a confocal microscopy suite, an electron microscope, cell and molecular biology laboratories, neuroanatomical and neurophysiological laboratories. In addition, the associated facilities of the Tulane Regional Primate Center are available, as are those of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the F. Edward Hebert Riverside Research Center. Through the Graduate School, training is offered leading to the Ph.D. degree in Structural and Cellular Biology.
