Degree Programs
The Department of Structural and Cellular Biology offers programs of graduate study leading to the Ph.D. in Structural and Cellular Biology at Tulane University. The purpose of the program is to train outstanding research scientists and teachers with a broad background in structural and cellular biology qualifying them to embark on careers as investigators and teachers.
An individualized curriculum of study is developed to meet each trainee's objectives. Usually the student is able to participate in research early in his or her training, since the program ordinarily introduces investigative work along with formal courses. The trainee has the opportunity to choose his or her field of study from the broad areas of knowledge encompassed by the several basic medical sciences. Interdisciplinary studies can be arranged. The student may realistically expect to obtain the Ph.D. degree in four to five years. The favorable student-faculty ratio allows for a close day-to-day working relationship between student and adviser. |

Applying
Although there is no specific deadline for the submission of applications to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences, candidates requiring financial assistance should see that all necessary information is furnished no later than February 1 if they wish to be considered for admission in August of the same year. The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences advises students not requiring financial aid to submit their applications by July 1 for the Fall semester, December 1 for the Spring semester, and May 1 for the Summer sessions. Students are advised to consider June as the time of entrance, since certain graduate core courses can be taken during the summer. Scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations are required.

Curriculum
| The Department of Structural and Cellular Biology offers and participates in the following degree programs: |
Ph.D. in Structural and Cellular Biology The basic pattern of training in Structural and Cellular Biology conforms to the regulations of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences, with certain requirements superimposed by the Department. The minimum requirements of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciencesinclude 48 hours of formal coursework and an individual research program under faculty supervision, culminating in a dissertation. The program leading to the Ph.D. degree is composed of both a "structured" and "unstructured" portion. The "structured" portion consists of the core curriculum in anatomy and courses selected from the basic science. The "unstructured" portion consists of advanced graduate courses and research. It is designed to provide depth and sophistication of knowledge and technique in the area of individual research interest to each student. |
