Outpatient Surgery

  All students are required to complete 2 weeks in the outpatient surgery setting. Two or four week electives at any accredited academic health center that meets the following objectives will also satisfy this requirement. During this time we endeavor to broaden the students experience in evaluating surgical patients and to increase their understanding of the different environments in which surgery is performed. The outpatient surgery component of the surgical clerkship can be accomplished (but is not limited to) any of the following settings:

    Tulane/Lakeside or Ochsner:
  1. Ophthalmology
  2. Moh's Surgery-Dermatology
  3. General Surgery - Ochsner
  4. Breast Surgery - Ochsner
  5. Colo-Rectal Surgery - Ochsner
  6. Urology
    Other accredited institutions:
  1. Orthopedics
  2. Otolaryngology
  3. Urology

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Continuation of the basic goals set forth in the main inpatient-based surgical clerkship including
    1. Gaining Medical Knowledge of surgical diseases through readings and through interactions with clinicians; also through hands-on experience with assisting and performing procedures under the guidance of clinicians
    2. Demonstrate competence in performing Patient Care tasks such as taking histories, performing physical examinations, constructing differential diagnoses, creating problem lists, and developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans
    3. Augment their Communication Skills with patients and colleagues
    4. Demonstrate Professionalism toward their patients and colleagues
    5. Learn the Social and Community Context of Healthcare
  2. Specific to the Outpatient Surgery setting:
    1. Understand the indications for surgery in the outpatient setting
    2. Understand the risks and benefits of surgery in the outpatient setting
    3. Demonstrate proficiency with differentiating normal versus abnormal exam findings for the specialty examination
    4. Learn the differences in focus and skill required to evaluate patients in the outpatient setting such as "Focused Examination" techniques based on the surgical specialty experience
      1. Pre-operative evaluation including risk assessment
      2. Review of ancillary testing results
      3. Post-operative evaluation
        1. Wound healing
        2. Resolution/improvement of condition prompting surgery
    5. Become familiar with and participate in outpatient procedures specific for specialty
      1. Clinic-based diagnostic procedures
      2. Clinic-based invasive procedures
      3. Ambulatory surgery/outpatient OR-based invasive procedures
